This page is organised as follows:
University housing: Registration for housing is theoretically closed since March 31. We have a "waiting list", we expect that some single rooms in Arts et Métiers and Cachan will be available.
Cité Universitaire (see also our arrival information).
Résidence universitaire de Cachan (see also our arrival information).
Summary
Hotels: We recommend that you reserve your hotel room as soon as possible: better safe than sorry. The hotels listed below are of four kinds:
1 Those with reservation through an agency.
2 Those where you need to make the reservation yourself, with prices above 600FF/night,
3 As in 2, but with lowest price between 400FF and 600FF,
4 Others.
UNIVERSITY HOUSING
Important information: We do not reimburse housing deposits anymore, unless you find someone to replace you. Here are also some recommendations and answers to frequently asked questions:
The Cité
Universitaire
is located on Boulevard Jourdan in the 14th arrondissement.
There is a direct RER line from Cité Universitaire to Luxembourg
(3 stops) or Saint-Michel (4 stops), and from there it is a 5 minute walk to
la Sorbonne. Within Paris, the RER functions as part of the subway system
(and in particular uses the same tickets). It operates until around 1am
(the last RER leaves the Châtelet stop at 12:45 am).
There are also two bus lines (21 starting at Porte de Gentilly, and 38
starting at Porte d'Orléans), and a direct metro line from Porte
d'Orléans to Saint-Michel. If you miss the last RER or metro,
there are also
night buses every hour on the half hour (Noctambus line J, fare: 30FF).
The Cité Universitaire consists of several residences belonging to various countries. It is located in a big park, and an added attraction of this type of housing is the atmosphere and character of the various residences.
Unless otherwise mentioned, a single room has a small (= twin) bed, a table or desk and a chair, a lamp, shelves or closet, curtains, and a wash basin. Double rooms are larger, and have the same type of furnishing but for two people. Sheets, pillows and blankets are provided, but NO towel or soap. The comfort is what you can expect from a student room in a university housing: clean and practical, but minimal. On each floor, there are showers and toilets, and kitchens with a refrigerator, an electric oven and a stove, and a few kitchen utensils. The Restaurant Universitaire is open for lunch and dinner (30FF per meal). The cafeteria is open all day, and serves breakfast for 14FF. If you are a student, you can get student discounts by showing your student card. You may want to get also an "International student card", as some institutions require it as proof of your student status.
Deposit: All financial transactions will have to be done by us. We have paid to the houses a deposit representing a certain percentage of the total price of your stay, and this deposit is not refundable anymore. In case of cancellation, if you find a person willing to take over your reservation, we can make the switch, but you need to contact us so that we can arrange the financial questions with you and your replacement.
Below is the list of houses where we obtained rooms. They are listed in
increasing order of comfort (and of price).
The Maison des Arts et Métiers
1, avenue Pierre Massé
75690 Paris Cedex 14
Comments: the rooms have been entirely redone and
are newly furnished; they are clean and pleasant, and have double-paned
windows. One bad point: windows must be kept shut at night because of the
noise. The two buildings are located on either side of the "Boulevard
périphérique", and the traffic noise is important. The
double-paned windows give a very good phonic insulation (the Director of the
house lives in that building), and the rooms get fresh filtered air through a
vent. The toilet facilities are locked, and can be opened with your
room key (a magnetic card); there are separate facilities for men and women,
and we will ask you for your gender when you register.
The
Maison des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires.
5, Boulevard Jourdan
75690 Paris Cedex 14
Comments: The common rooms are
pleasant and cosy, and the furniture has been selected with some thought
(paintings on the wall, vases, etc.).
In my opinion, this certainly compensates for the absence of a wash basin in the
rooms. The ambiance is warm and relaxed.
The
Fondation Argentine.
27 A, Bd Jourdan
75690 Paris Cedex 14
Comments: this is a very beautiful building,
very pleasant. The floor and furniture in the rooms are made of dark
varnished wood. Cable TV in the common room.
The
Collège d'Espagne
7 E, Boulevard Jourdan
75690 Paris Cedex 14
Comments: very good common facilities: large common room, a TV room,
music room, cafeteria serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, conference room
with projector, and computer room (20FF per hour). The house will close on
July 31st.
Résidence du CROUS à CACHAN
60, rue Camille Desmoulins
94234 Cachan Cedex
This résidence is located in Bagneux, a nearby southern suburb of Paris. It is accessible by RER, and the ride to the Luxembourg stop takes about 15 minutes. RER station: Bagneux. Then a 10 minute walk. (Alternative: get out at the Arcueil-Cachan station; take the bus 187 in the direction "Charcot-Zola", get off at "Division Leclerc-Camille Desmoulins"; this is directly opposite the entrance 60 rue Camille Desmoulins, where you have the "Porterie".) See our page for more details. The last RER train from Châtelet to Bagneux leaves at around 12:45 am, and there are also night buses every hour (on the half hour; Noctambus line L, fare: 30F). The cost of an RER ticket to Bagneux is 9.50F; we recommend that you buy a "carnet de tickets Paris-Bagneux", which has 10 tickets and costs 76F, and maybe also a Carte Orange Zones 1-2-3 which costs 113F, see details on our Transportation page.
Payment procedures: The payment of your accommodation will be made through LC 2000, and you need to pay us before July 7 the total cost of your housing . The procedure for payment is the usual one and is described on our "Registration" page.

Hotels which you can reserve through an agency.
Except for Hôtel de France, the hotels listed below are three star
hotels and are therefore quite expensive. A "Single" room is a room with a
large bed, for single occupancy. Rooms for double occupancy have either
a large bed ("Double") or two small beds ("Twins"). There are also rooms
for three people or more. All rooms have a bathroom with toilet, wash basin,
and shower or bathtub, and of course TV, phone, etc. The prices quoted below
are for a single room with a shower. Rooms for two people or with a
bathtub are slightly more expensive.
Reservation procedure: You complete and sign the Hotel
form, and send it to the travel agency "Central Voyages" by
fax. They will make the reservation with the hotel, pay the hotel a
deposit representing 30% of the total
cost of your stay and debit your card for the corresponding amount,
and send you
a confirmation and a receipt for your deposit.
You will pay the hotel directly for the remainder when you check out.
The deposit is refundable until a month before arrival.

below. The phone and fax numbers are given for phoning from abroad; from
France, you should replace the prefix 33 1 by 01.
The stars are only indicative - in some cases we just didn't know
how many stars the hotel had and didn't put any. As you will see below,
most hotels at reasonable prices are located near Place d'Italie.
In terms of transportation, this is not a bad location: bus 27 is fairly
frequent, runs on holidays and in the evenings until 12:30 am, and
takes you directly to la Sorbonne in about 10 minutes.
There are also three metro lines taking you
directly to Montparnasse, Bastille, and Jussieu or Châtelet.
